Pointe Shoe Fittings
Pointe shoe fittings will be by appointment only.
We want to make sure that every dancer goes home with a perfect pair of correctly fitted pointe shoes. Pointe shoes that don't fit well can be very uncomfortable and can cause injuries ranging from blisters to stress fractures. Fittings generally take about 30 to 45 minutes, allowing us the proper amount of time to assess the dancer’s feet and give them time to try on different styles and brands. We look forward to meeting your dancer's needs!
Make sure your toe nails are nicely trimmed before arriving for your fitting.
We recommend wearing convertible ballet tights.
Bring your most recent pair of pointe shoes along with any toe pads and accessories you currently use.
If this is your first pair of pointe shoes, you may wish to wear your favorite leotard with your convertible tights for pictures. It's a special day and wearing your favorite dancewear makes pictures even more memorable.
First time pointe shoe fittings are very comprehensive and can take up to an hour.
Pointe Shoe FAQs
Can I bring my friends and family? Absolutely! While your fitting is taking place, your friends and family are more than welcome to take photos of you. In order to give everyone the attention and time they need to find their perfect shoe, we conduct our fittings on a one-on-one basis.
What do new pointe shoes feel like? Your pointe shoes are going to feel very different than your street shoes and other dance shoes. They should feel snug in the box to prevent “sinking”. The first time you go up, the feelings can range from pain-free to mild discomfort however we don't want you in any unnecessary pain. Make sure to tell your fitter if you feel any pinching, sharp pain, curling of the toes, or numbness. Also keep this in mind – the more you wear your shoes the softer and more comfortable they will become.
Why does a first-time pointe shoe fitting take a longer amount of time? Patience is key! The pointe shoe fitting process is trial and error so it’s not uncommon to try on numerous pairs of shoes, which is why we set aside a significant amount of dedicated time for a first pointe shoe appointment. Going up in pointe shoes for the first time also takes some getting used to. Everyone has unique feet that respond differently once they are wearing pointe shoes.
How do I know when it is time for a new pair? Sadly, pointe shoes don’t last forever. Since most pointe shoes are made of natural materials, they break down over time. It's just part of the process of wearing pointe shoes. Unfortunately for beginners, it is normal to grow out of a shoe before it wears out. Pointe shoes soften and form to the foot quickly and break down when they are moist, which is why airing them out after class is so important. Once you feel the shoe is no longer providing the necessary support - you are going too far over en pointe, parts of the box or shank are no longer functioning properly, or you can feel the ground through your shoes - then it is time to purchase a new pair.
How much are new pointe shoes? Pointe shoes cost on average around $100/pair - sometimes more, sometimes less depending on the brand and materials used in construction. This does not include pointe shoe accessories that are often necessary for optimal fit, security, and comfort. We want to be your trusted partner in your pointe shoe journey so we will only recommend products that we feel are necessary.
